Lt. Grant Nelson

I started my law enforcement career over 19 years ago at the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office in Phoenix, Arizona. My first assignment was in the maximum security section of the jail, where I learned valuable skills. After being there for only seven months, I applied for and was selected for their SWAT team. While part of this specialized team, I was afforded the opportunity to attend the General Instructor School and be certified as a Field Training Officer. I went on to become an instructor in First Aid/AED, TASER, Less Than Lethal weapons, and Firearms.

In 2007, I was offered a police officer position at the Matthews Police Department, so my family and I relocated to the area. Since coming to Matthews, I have worked as a patrol officer, Corporal, Sergeant and now hold the rank of Lieutenant. As the Patrol Division Commander, I manage our patrol squads, traffic, K-9, and animal control units in my current assignment. When not working in the office, I enjoy getting out and working alongside officers I support, much of which is done on our department motorcycle.

I really enjoy riding motorcycles and have been doing so since I was 11 years old. I have taken the Harley Davidson basic motorcycle training course and, most notable, the Northwestern Law Enforcement Motorcycle (80 hours) training course. My goal is to share much of my training and experience with those around me and hopefully gain knowledge from them too.
