In 1847, the City of Wilmington hired its first police officer. The Department is now nationally accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement (CALEA) and employs approximately 250 sworn personnel and 100 civilian personnel. The Wilmington Police Department strives to be a source of honor and integrity for the citizens of our great City as well as the working men and women of our agency. It is with this distinction that we remain committed to transparency, respect, unity, and teamwork. The Department is made up of several divisions including Patrol, Detectives Division, Support Services, and Special Operations.
The Traffic Unit is part of the Special Operations Division and is comprised of 7 Sworn personnel and 6 Civilian Crash Investigators. Sworn personnel are tasked with enforcing motor vehicle violations, and investigating serious injury and fatality collisions. The Civilian Crash Investigators are tasked with taking non injury collisions which occur throughout the city. The motor unit is a collateral duty for the sworn members of the Traffic Unit who volunteer.
The motor unit originally used Harley Davidson motorcycles into the 1970s when the unit functionally ceased to exist. In 2005 the motor unit was restarted and began using BMW motorcycles. At the present time the Traffic Unit has a total of four BMW motorcycles at its disposal, equipped with RADAR, which are used for special escorts as well as enforcing the motor vehicle laws of North Carolina.
